Governing Quality and Change
For board members of health centers, rural hospitals and safety net nonprofits, new or sitting, patient members included. Eight short modules: shared language for change, overseeing quality without managing it, reading a dashboard, a run chart and the yearly federal report, bringing the patient's voice to decisions, asking the right questions before a big approval, reading the money and the reserve, supporting and evaluating your CEO, and setting the year's few priorities.
By the end, you will be able to:
- Explain what change management adds to an improvement, in shared words with staff
- Ask the four quality questions at every meeting and tell oversight from management
- Tell normal bounce from real change on a chart, and read your yearly report against the state and the nation
- Bring what patients see to a decision without speaking for everyone, and make room for patient members
- Ask four questions before you vote on a merger, a new site, a service or a system, and ask for the report back
- Read the three money reports and the reserve, and ask the right questions before a budget vote or a cut
- Set goals with your CEO, give feedback through the year, and plan for an emergency
- Set the year's few priorities, keep routine items off the main agenda, and stay out of the weeds
